1965, Marquette Frye is pulled over in Watts
For alleged drunk driving. He failed his field sobriety test. So far, a routine traffic stop.
But the police wouldn’t let his brother drive the car home, and eventually this brother, and their mother, were arrested. And then the riot broke out.
In reality, the riots were not “caused’ by a routine traffic stop. They had been coming for a while, undoubtedly. Lots of unrest, lots of accusations of police brutality.
Still, as is so often the case, the spark that starts the conflagration is remembered.
